Rowers must arrive by noon on Friday, May 16, and they will be released to parents on Sunday afternoon or evening (depending on their last race). Over the course of two days, we will compete in many races against some of the top teams in our region, so be ready for a full day of rowing! All athletes are eligible to attend this regatta.

Dressing Warm on the Water
As we prepare to start moving practices to the lake, new and returning rowers alike need to make sure they are dressed appropriately for rowing in cold air and water temperatures. No matter how warm you think it is outside, it is much colder on the water when facing wind and backsplash, so a great rule of thumb to heed is to dress for temperatures 10º colder than is forecasted. Being prepared for practice means being dressed warm enough, and the coaching staff will not hesitate to send athletes home if they show up to the lake without appropriate layers.
The best strategy for dressing for practice is to layer wicking/athletic long sleeves and pants. Cotton should be avoided at all costs: splashes are inevitable, so every practice you should plan to get a little wet (even though rowers should never directly enter the water). When wet, cotton will actively pull heat away from your body, so a pair of cotton sweats will do you more harm than good. An example outfit for a day where the temperature at 4:15 is 45º: an athletic tank top (or equivalent), Under Armour cold gear long sleeve, and windbreaker on top, and spandex shorts (or equivalent) underneath a pair of leggings (or jogger equivalent). This sample athlete also wears a warm hat!
Socks are up to personal discretion: Smartwool socks (or similar wool socks) are a great option to stay warm, but may be uncomfortable when wet. If that is a problem for you, the next best option may be wearing 2+ pairs of regular/running socks. No matter how many pairs you are wearing, athletes should keep a minimum of one extra pair of socks in their bag or car at all times. The same rule should apply to hats/headbands and a jacket. A good windbreaker or rain jacket should always be on hand, regardless of weather forecast, and a hat or thermal headband is especially important while we wait for summer temperatures because the head is where body heat escapes first when it's chilly out. Additionally, it is important that athletes have a warm, dry change of pants, socks, and/or sweatshirt to change into immediately after practice!
If you are unsure whether you will need to wear a layer at practice, always bring it anyway. At the end of the day, it is much easier to stash an extra long sleeve or hat in your bag than it is to lose a valuable practice or, even worse, sit in the boat unnecessarily cold, wet, and miserable.
Kowalski's Fundraiser - Need volunteers for 4-6 PM!
We are still looking for volunteers for the final 2-hour slot on Saturday, April 19 from 4-6 p.m. for our Kowalski's fundraiser. Rowers WILL NOT be bagging - they will carry out and make conversation with the customers. Rowers are welcome to sign up for more than one shift! And rowers can use these hours for National Honor Society or other extracurricular activities that require volunteer hours.
Upcoming Regattas
Registration is now open for our spring regattas! Both of our spring regattas wiill require air travel (though parents are welcome to drive their child to the regatta, if that is your preference). Parents are required to get their child from Minnesota to the regatta location, and then the coaches and chaperones will take over for the duration of the regatta. Once your child has met up with the team, the coaches and parent chaperones will provide transportation to/from the race site, lodging, and all food for your athlete (including food that accommodates any dietary restrictions). Once the racing has concluded, your athlete will be released to you to return home.
Note: If your child would like to attend a regatta but a parent/family member is not able to attend, please email vicepresident@tcyrc.org for recommended flight information so your child can be on a flight with a coach or parent chaperone.
If you have any questions about what to expect at the regattas, please email vicepresident@tcyrc.org.

Chicago Sprints (Chicago, IL) - July 11-13
